Over many years of traveling, we have found that October turns out to be one of the best months of the year for a trip. The lack of both crowds and weather extremes makes it ideal almost anywhere, but especially for destinations that get inundated with tourists the rest of the year.
These are some of our top destinations to experience in October, rates are lower, you get the place all to yourself and there is still a mildness about the weather to enjoy being outdoors.
Nicknamed the Tuscany of Croatia, Istria is far more quiet and unvisited than Tuscany at any time of the year but especially so in October. The rustic landscape is home to centuries old olive groves, vineyards and forests while the nearby ancient towns bring the magic of history to life with their maritime culture. There are some fantastic seasonal resorts, golf clubs and hiking opportunities as well as miles of coastline and fresh seafood. We stayed at the Kempinski in Istria and it turned out to be the perfect combination for all these experiences while indulging in a wellness resort.
This is a city that for us is always a pleasure, the seasonal crowds and summer heat however are much less so. October and November both are the absolute best time to visit Rome. We found everything open, (as opposed to August when it shuts down) and tourism numbers are at their lowest point, which means no waiting in massive lines for the Sistine chapel and our favorite morning cappuccino. What’s more, the afternoons are still long and the golden sunlight just makes the classical ruins even more picturesque.
Los Cabos, Mexico
Everything is booming in Cabo these days. World class hotels and restaurants as well as boutique hotels are drawing more and more tourists to Baja California than ever before. Between the jet set and the waves of seasonal tourists however the place can feel more like a subway and less like a tropical getaway in peak season. That’s why we recommend October, weather is mild, you get the place all to yourself and the fantastic new hotels are more available both in occupancy and
New England, United States
We’ve seen Autumn all over the world, but there is something inherently magical about the Northeastern United States. Whether it is the quaint colonial era towns, the endless stretches of brilliantly colored forests or the beauty of fields in harvest, this landscape captures everything we imagine fall to be. The beauty of this destination is that it moves across several states and one can find relaxing long afternoons in everything from major cities to small country towns and all the destinations are covered with the same charm.
United Arab Emirates
The heart of the Middle East is essentially in hibernation during summer months as temperatures soar to scorching levels and there’s not much to do without air conditioning. The peak tourism months are December through March when the weather is coolest, so this is where October fits right in. The temperatures begin to drop and one can enjoy long daylight hours at the beaches, mosques, museums and theme parks which Abu Dhabi and Dubai especially have become known for the world over. The hotel rates are decent and there is much more availability to access everything without the crowds.
We have extensive experience in these destinations and many others like them. Be sure to contact us for personal travel advising if you would like to utilize our expertise in crafting an amazing journey for your October holiday and beyond!
