The coming of a new year brings us to thoughts of new travels of course! 2018 is full of hope, possibilities and surprises and we feel the best way to take advantage of all of those are to plan ahead so as to have the best experiences possible.
These are the top ten destinations we see offering wonderful experiences and promising world class appeal for distinguished and discerning travelers like ourselves:
These islands were largely spared the destructive 2017 hurricane season and they have been on track to be opening some great new hotels and resorts. The IMF has called them the “notable exception” to increased growth in the Caribbean and they don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Baha Mar, Grand Hyatt and Rosewood are all big players looking to open their doors in the new year and increased interest from Canadian tourists has notably made tourism boom.
We just had a stopover in Quito recently and the city is really intent on renovations. It has a fantastic airport, Uber is working now, Colonial centers are being renovated and the hotel, service and exploration industry are getting ever more expansive. Its no longer a place just to jump to the Galapagos, Ecuador has it all, mountains, jungle and cloud forests for the active, the luxury minded and eco-loving traveler.
After some real tourism setbacks and busts in recent years, due to sociological and political changes, Egypt is on a comeback. The Four Seasons Cairo is finishing a major renovation for the New Year, The Times hotel is opening a new property and Hilton has a comprehensive plan through 2022 to open new properties. Travel warnings have decreased and much of the unrest is now relegated to largely un-touristed areas. Luxury properties are still booming with great hospitality for bargain prices.
The seemingly endless hotel openings and tourism offerings are not stopping in China’s premiere beach resort. We’ve been touting Sanya for years and it is still very much under appreciated by Western tourists, but make no mistake, you won’t find this level of hospitality, these grandiose resorts and such a beautiful tropical setting anywhere on the planet for the prices and privacy you get here.
One of our favorites for a reason, Slovenia never ceases to amaze us. It is so accessible from all of Europe. It offers the perfect road trip style of touring. You can see the beach, the mountains, prairies and medieval walled cities within 3 hours of one another. It has one of the best qualities of life and most authentic experiences of nature, culture and fun living on the planet. Unlock your love of nature in 2018.
Paso Robles/San Miguel Arcangel
We have been all up and down the Golden Coast, but there’s something magical about these semi-arid hills. The wine from Paso is alluring and distinctive, we’ve enjoyed incredible Airbnb’s, walked the vineyards, sampled wines, cheeses and olive oil and its a place where you never want the stay to end. The culture reminds us of so many famous wine regions before they’ve been overrun. We invite foodies and wino’s of distinction to discover the beautiful missions and enduring vines of this well kept California secret.
There are few places in the world that creates a sense of place like Aspen. It is truly unique. It is wonderfully remote, but with every luxury you could wish for. The mountains, trails, slopes and hotels are all made for the most discerning aficionados of the mountain dwelling life. Its a place that words really fail to describe, it so much more than an elite destination, its a spellbinding one.
This is a huge area to be sure and so much of it is breathtaking, but the two places we heartily recommend are Mussoorie and Shimla. These alpine districts showcase the might of the mountains, are home to stylish resort towns and some colonial gems. The rooftop of India is full of treasures which stir the soul and bring travelers face to face with the raw beauty of nature.
In recent years Nicaragua has really been impressive. It is on a path to distinguish itself in tourism, top quality resorts, safety and leisure sports. From the majestic volcanoes, to the colonial villages like Granada to the hospitable resort of Mukul, there is more to do here than you’ve probably heard about.
The majesty of Switzerland is reflected in its panoramas, the quaint village life, its impressive infrastructure and penchant for all things done well. We have found that the mountains seem to be a theme that brings out the best in many cultures. Its evident here from the quality of food, logistics, architecture, art and so many other manifestations, Switzerland is a place where life is lived ideally for the full time resident as well as the stop-over guest.
