This hotel turned out to be a very pleasant surprise for us during our stay in Mauritius. Perhaps it was because our previous stay was at an even more exclusive resort we had lower expectations of this property, but it delivered in full.
The Westin is easy to find if driving oneself or easy to reach being just 45 minutes from the island’s airport and twenty minutes from the capital. The campus is noticeably long with a stretch of beach along turtle bay. This at first raised concern, nothing ruins a holiday like feeling you are in the midst of a crowd, but we have to commend the hotel, the layout is ideal. At no time did it feel like any part of the hotel was inundated with guests.
As Starwood members of high status we received a nice upgrade in the room and access to the resort lounge which was a beautiful facility. It was centrally located with, luxury magazines, a fully stocked bar and a generous offering of snacks and food services throughout the day.
The rooms are set within larger villa structures, each containing a balcony that angles towards the sea, some with a fuller view than others, but each has a private feeling. The room is set up in such a way as to incorporate the sitting area and bedroom into one portion while an open wall and doorway connect the bathroom. It cuts down on bathroom privacy for sure, but overall allows the space to feel larger and more open. The room is well appointed with tasteful island décor, well maintained furniture and upholstery and all of the technology expected of a property of this caliber.
Westin maintains a healthy living theme across its properties and it is very well showcased here. The gym is part of the larger spa complex which enjoys a spacious layout on the property. The machines are top notch and the workout space is inviting. The spa has steam room and jacuzzi facilities which although they are a bit small and shared between the sexes nevertheless function well.
The hotel offers complimentary water sports equipment and excursions which is a hallmark of the luxury hotels on the island. The views commanded at the main pavilion, the restaurants and along the beachfront are among some of the best on the island. There are adults only versus child friendly pools which is a good theme of the property, something to do for every type of traveler.
