After more than four visits we can say with confidence that Porto is one of the most underrated cities in all of Europe. It has a sense of identity, uniqueness and culture that is magnetic for discerning travelers.
This past trip we found many new and exciting things happening in the city, but we weren’t prepared for how fantastic the Sheraton turned out to be.
Situated just 5km from the center of town we were interested to see what the space offered. Now part of the Marriott family, it was attractive to book as Platinum members and see what perks and upgrades were in store for us. Upon arrival we were given an upgrade to a junior suite, access to the lounge and a welcome gift. Check in was friendly and our car parking was complimentary as well with our status.
The hotel is located in a residential neighborhood, it is tranquil, spacious and blends city chic with the idea of an urban escape. Lots of glass is used to bring natural light to the lobby and rooms have beautiful wooden floors and comfortable furniture that allowed us to feel right at home.
The masterpiece of the hotel however is its basement level Spa. It occupies the length of the entire hotel building and is really large for a European hotel and just among city hotels in general. Staff were incredibly welcoming and the opening hours are generous, from 7am till 10pm. Once inside the changing area is a luxurious locker room, there are three relaxation rooms, one in darkness and silence, one with a waterfall and skylight and one with bed like couches beside the indoor pool and massive jacuzzi.
The fun doesn’t stop there. One large steam room and sauna occupy a prominent place while three other variations of steam room, including a hammam and salt room are accessible too. It was really a marvel and so tough to decide how to spend our time! Faced with an amazingly panoramic city outside and a truly indulgent spa inside you’ll want to budget your time as efficiently as possible to enjoy it all.
The hotel has luxury boutiques, a fine dining restaurant, attentive staff and a modern lounge with excellent service. A great selection of Douro wines, Ports and an outdoor balcony make for memorable and relaxing moments after a day of touring or lounging in the spa, or ideally, both!
