San Juan del Sur is a blossoming surfers paradise, a treasure that has been becoming known to many in recent years. It is only around 40 minutes from the Costa Rican border and the drive from Managua is around two hours. It offers plenty of seaside hotels and restaurants like La Terrazza right on the beach.
In a popular resort town like this, most other places on earth prices are steep, restaurants are often tourist traps and the food is lousy. Since San Juan del Sur is still relatively untouched by massive numbers it retains an authenticity and charm in its establishments that we hope remains for a long time.
If you want one of the best views on the entire beach and good Italian cooking check out La Terrazza. We read good reviews first off and hearing the owners chat at a side table in Italian on their break inspired lots of confidence. The pizzas were very similar to the type we have eaten in Rome with the crust and variety of pizza types. There are all sorts of drinks on the menu and the open air breezeway is a source of relaxation and shade.
We came a little late for lunch and parking was a big challenge, we drove around till we found a spot. The restaurant does not accept credit cards so be sure to have Nicaraguan Cordobas or US dollars handy. The service was very prompt and the pizzas were delicious, we enjoyed an arugula pizza as well as a veggie pizza. This place gets a great rating from us because we have Italian food almost wherever we go in the world and this holds a good standard. The location is unbeatable and the prices are good and so it defies being a tourist trap and makes for a great place to savor good food on the beach.
