Review of: La Reunion Golf Resort and Residences

La Reunion is a captivating and remarkable resort. The services, attention, rooms, villas, pools, personnel and so much more have a flawless and welcoming character about them. What is more, this paradise of a resort is set on the garden slopes of a majestic and active volcano. The natural setting plus the relaxing resort comforts, provides one of the most lasting memories of a place we have ever experienced in travel.

Arrival and Location

Getting to La Reunion is made easy by the relative proximity it has to the historic and precious town of Antigua . The resort is located along route 14 just around 30km from Antigua, close to a smaller town called Alotenango. One can arrive via rental car, special van or limo pickup or even in helicopter, which is not uncommon for foreign tourists and local golfers alike. What makes the resort so appealing naturally are the slopes of the four volcanoes which encircle the view and the corridor to the Pacific Ocean and the town of Escuintla which can be seen on a clear day. Feeling the rumblings of the water volcano and seeing its nightly fireshow is a sight to behold with wonder.

Resort layout

The use of space is intelligent in this resort. Everything from the massive clubhouse, to each of the rooms and wonderfully nestled villas is complimentary to the sweeping views. The clubhouse houses the lobby, pro shop, men’s and women’s locker rooms featuring steam bath, lounge area and a members only lounge and relaxation area too. There are two inviting pools, an infinity one overlooking the slopes of the volcano and a more relaxed lagoon shaped escape surrounded by a garden. An outside porch area, complimented by indoor spaces with floor to ceiling windows is a popular spot from which to dine in the views of the Agua volcano’s lush slopes. Mirador Restaurant, Sky Bar and Bar Wayeb all provide excellent ventures into exquisite culinary experiences.

From the first moment of arrival the staff are hospitable and delighted to meet you. They are able to handle any request, from making an outside call, to substituting menu selections in the restaurant, to pressing clothing. The attentive personnel also knew our names within hours of our arrival. It is truly a delight to interact with all of them.

The property features suites and villas. All of them are generous on space and feature unique design that is a modern use of classical Guatemalan architecture, use of colored stone floors, rich, heavy woods and full of artesian splendor. The suites have a lighter, more tropical décor to them, while the villas are darker and cozier, featuring the coolness of stone architecture and wooden furniture. Rooms come packed with the latest technology and entertainment options. There are one and two bedroom villas. Our villa featured a private infinity pool with a lounge patio as well as an indoor Jacuzzi hot tub. The beds and posh bath products were a touch of celestial comfort as well.

Fuego Maya Golf Resort

This Pete Dye and son designed course is panoramic, challenging and complex. It is the crown jewel of the resort, providing some of its most incredible views and pleasant , for golfers and non-golfers alike. For those who don’t play, a cart ride around these 18 holes is a breathtaking journey. For those who play this will be one of the most challenging and memorable courses of a lifetime. It is a 72 par course which at points goes straight up and down the volcano slopes. The holes are represented by the months of the Mayan calendar. The course has lush greenery, canyons, tricky sand traps, lakes and waterfalls, which makes for a tour de force of Guatemala’s spirited natural environment.
