Expert travel advice for planning a December trip

Every winter around the holidays for the last decade or so I’ve been on the road using the treasured time to explore the world. Along the way I’ve learned some good travel techniques to avoid both the crowds and costs that can be part of the “most wonderful time of the year”.

Don’t wait till the last minute to buy your tickets,

This one comes first because if you are thinking of going somewhere, sooner is better than later. Market research shows the ideal time to buy Christmas and New Year’s bookings is actually in Mid to late August. There are always options until the last minute but why pay loads more for something you can get right now?

Go against the flow

If you want to add stress to your trip go to a popular destination for the time of year. It depends on place to place, but a good rule of thumb is to avoid tropical beaches as many from the colder latitudes will descend on these places and if you’re headed to colder places avoid those near winter sports or those with a lot of Christmas and New Year’s appeal. The costs and crowds make these spots overrun and the quality of hospitality can suffer a lot and leave you with a bad impression of the place.

Go somewhere new

This time of year can be an amazing opportunity to go to a quieter European capital, or a tropical Southeastern Asian city or just some out of the way town or region where you can enjoy the calm and serenity of an escape.

Europe

This is an excellent time of year to go to most destinations in Europe because it is actually low season with the cold. like Madrid, Rome and Lisbon have a mild climate and often beautiful markets. What’s even better than the cities though are the beautiful countryside’s. Here you can avoid the costly and cramped city and go with an Airbnb rental and prepare a homemade Christmas dinner in a new place.

Asia

Is another excellent place to spend a winter holiday. Flights are often very affordable between countries and long haul flights are as affordable as those to Europe. Beach resorts will likely be crowded with Europeans, Australians and Russians, so we recommend big capital cities which have gotten into the Christmas and New Year’s Spirit ever increasingly in recent years.

Bangkok: Thailand’s capital boasts beautiful weather, amazing and shopping centers with holiday glamour and best of all the tourist attractions are open and most of them free on New Year’s Day.

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian’s are always looking for a chance to celebrate and Christmas is no different. On Christmas eve people take to the streets to celebrate will silly string and malls stay open late with live music.

Beijing: Is a city that has completely absorbed the spirit of Christmas. The whole capital is decorated for the season. Shopping centers put together amazing displays of light and decorations. There are many sales going on during the season. Another great thing is that December is low season for international visitors so one will find impressive deals in the most luxurious hotels where the display of Christmas and the variety of celebrations are breathtaking.
