It has been dubbed as progress in paradise and one of Vietnam’s best kept secrets. Phu Quoc is the idyllic Asian island with an exotic appeal. It has been gaining popularity among travelers, first as a great value millennial destination and now as it is drawing luxury hotels to its shores, it is an increasingly alluring place.
The primary allure of Phu Quoc is that it is visa free for everyone. We have done the visa for Vietnam in the past and it was not too difficult, but like all visas it is a hassle. The conditions around Phu Quoc are such that as long as your passport has six months validity and Phu Quoc is your end destination (even if you are transiting (through another Vietnam airport it is ok) and you have a flight back out and your stay does not exceed 30 days you can take advantage of it.
Beaches are the premiere attraction and this is the place where the sand is sugar white, thick palms and canopy grace the backdrop and the blue waters are shades of neon turquoise. Most beaches here are largely undeveloped in most parts so it can really make you feel like you are on a deserted island.
This is the essential experience if you want to be adventurous in a cultural way. Exotic foods, local trinkets, seafood and spices (especially pepper from local farms) are on display and for consumption and souvenirs. There is an active nightlife with everything from local beer to imported liquors.
The world’s longest oversea cable car ride (7,900m or almost 15 minutes) provides stunning views of the bay, island and other rich canopy and natural formations. It connects Phu Quoc Island to Hon Thom island, a beautiful nature preserve.
Over 50% of the island is a protected national park which means development won’t completely overrun the island. There are trails, mangroves, dense forests and some beautiful waterfalls all populated by wild snakes and birds.
JW Marriott Phu Quoc is not only one of the newest hotels in the chain, but it is unique. The hotel is built on a concept of a fictional university. As such there is a whole culture and backstory to the property which gives it an unforgettable character.
