JW Marriott Dominican Republic: our luxury experience in Santo Domingo

Our arrival to the biggest city of the Caribbean, Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic impressed us with the variety of upscale lifestyle offerings on offer. Our biggest experience of this was a stay at the luxurious and hospitable JW Marriott Santo Domingo, the first property of its name in the Caribbean.

Situation and arrival

The hotel sits within the Piantini area which makes up part of the high end sector of the city. We arrived from the taking a shared public van which was the most affordable way to come as taxis are expensive and the hotel does not offer any kind of shuttle service directly. The hotel is less than a year in operation and already it is performing very well in the local market.

The JW Marriott Santo Domingo is well situated in the commercial district, attached to the high end Blue Mall and not far from the historic Zona Colonial. The hotel features 15 floors, 122 rooms, 28 suites and 8 meeting rooms. When we arrived we were warmly greeted and taken from the mall entrance lobby to the elevated hotel lobby. Our status was recognized and upgrades were given. The staff were all upbeat and eager to be helpful. English and Spanish fluency were abundant. The suite was great for a city hotel. The bedroom was spacious with a comfy bed, top in room technologies, sleek workspace and relaxing reading chair. The bathroom had a large marble soaking tub and very modern fixtures. A walk in closet and entryway of rich wood gave a wonderful touch.

The combination of the hotel on top of the mall adds many great shops and restaurants to the experience overall. Inside the hotel are two on-site restaurants a lounge and bar and a grill with a patio. The city views are great. A small but modern fitness center and an infinity outdoor pool are on offer. We had access to the executive lounge which was a beautiful top floor space with many different snack and meal offerings during the day including an evening happy hour.
