Our first taste of Himalayan Hospitality: JW Marriott Mussoorie

Our first taste of Himalayan Hospitality: JW Marriott Mussoorie

As we were planning a 3 week tour of , we wanted to include some of the top for tourism, but also were keeping an eye on the wonderful and comparatively affordable luxury hotel chains which exist in these cities. One relatively new hotel we found was far off the top tier city map, but its panoramic locale, excellent reviews and mountain mystique convinced us it needed to be part of our trip: The JW Marriott Mussoorie Walnut Grove Resort and Spa.

This section of the Indian Himalayas is as alluring and scenic as any other. It is full of rugged peaks, high temples and views for miles. Situated just 6km from Mussoorie, a famous vacation town perched on a mountainside sits this lovely property. The hotel is around 1hr 20 minutes from the nearest major of Dehradun. You can see how to make that journey on your own as we did here.

A unique perspective

What a view this place commands. It is build along a mountainside looking over a deep valley below and towering peaks in the distance for miles. As we walked in someone rang a gong to announce our arrival and received us with a traditional Tibetan cloth and marked our foreheads. The staff from start to finish could not have been more attentive. We were given a wonderful upgrade and a valley view. Note that mountain view in this hotel means the less desirable view as it looks up against the cliff on which the hotel is built, still scenic but valley view is preferable.

The suite to which we were escorted was elegant. It had the softest bed, an expansive balcony, a soaking tub with an outside view and lots of space. The in room decor was beautiful stone and wood. Note that this hotel is a getaway for families especially during the holidays. We had some noise issues caused by children playing in the halls, but management swiftly responded and made the space quieter.

There is a lot to do on the grounds. Everyday there is a busy activities schedule. Yoga in the mornings, an 11am gathering with lawn games, local musicians and snacks. As platinum members lounge privileges were translated to anytime coffee tea service in the lobby bar and pre-dinner drinks and snacks in the Trout restaurant. The staff were especially adept at making alterations to the food which addressed our dietary preferences. Many of the managers, chefs and team leaders made themselves known to us and tailored each experience to our delight. The gym staff were excellent and proactive in workout assistance. The Cedar Spa by L’Occitane was a heavenly retreat whose therapies were as rejuvenating as the surrounding mountain air.

We resist words like “perfect” and “best” just out of principle, but this was quite honestly a hotel with nothing lacking for a discerning luxury traveler. It has impeccable service, a unique location and a top notch team that understands how to make a hospitality experience personal and memorable. Thanks for being our host in the Himalayas JW Marriott Mussoorie!
