Hotel Review: Waldorf Astoria Panama

Panama City is a blossoming capital full of scenic oceanfront, spectacular tower style residences and world class . Waldorf Astoria is a new property gracing the skyline of a world class shopping and business city. It offers luxury escapes and sophistication for the discerning guest.

As a brand on the rise, Waldorf Astoria’s notable expansion in recent years is taking it far and wide across the globe and the Panama City property is a welcome installment.  The 248 room hotel is relatively new, having just opened months ago and it is a place to relish in the heart of town. From the moment one enters there is an entourage of friendly doormen, staff and front desk staff ready and willing to check you in effortlessly. The most noticeable feature is the friendliness of the staff. The first impressions were not the smoothest however, as they forgot to send the transit we purchased and we had to call to be picked up after a long wait. We received a nice upgrade upon check-in to a junior suite and our rewards status was acknowledged.

The rooms and indeed the entire hotel have a strong theme of plush and bright décor. The variances of color are gold and white with refined and modern furniture. The room was spacious with comfortable bedding, ample sitting space and a large bathroom complete with soaking tub, rain shower and beautiful stonework. Other amenities included a large storage closet, Nespresso machine and floor to ceiling windows. The situation of the property is well located in the downtown, yet it is one block inside from the Cinta Costera bayfront. This means that lower level rooms don’t have as clear of a view of the bay and even some of the towers in front are unpleasant to look at.

The hotel has a good breakfast array held in a panoramic and artistically savvy space. The service is stellar and the food options nicely varied. The interior décor of the restaurant is one of the most expressive and enjoyable of the whole hotel. There is an excellent spa, fitness and relaxation area, which is together in one complex. The spa, well equipped gym and popular salon occupy one atrium while the central pool Jacuzzi and bar take advantage of the open air deck to allow one to be immersed in the breezes and views of the bustling city towers. A steam room and locker area also provide for some interior relaxation at the other end of the complex.

The hotel offers a nice range of restaurants and bars, which offer pleasant places to socialize and dine in sumptuous service. BRIO Brassiere offers French and American cuisine, while Ginger is an upscale Sushi Bar and Lounge. Peacock Alley is an elegant spot to see and be seen in the impressive and welcoming lobby. All things considered the hotel is a classy downtown abode, well priced in this market, especially in the off season. Staff are truly friendly and gracious, service has room to improve in some areas and more attention in details is recommended. The property is a great way to experience Panama and a welcome addition to a competitive urban scene.
