The “Magnificent Mile” of Chicago’s trendy Michigan Avenue couldn’t be paired with a better luxury address than the unforgettable Waldorf Astoria Chicago. The domineering tower houses a palace of refinement, good taste and ultra-modern urban relaxation. When one is looking to experience a great sampling of Chicago’s competitive luxury hotel scene, this is certainly on the to-do list.
The mood of the hotel is set right upon arrival. The busy streets and elegant shopping fade in the distance as one enters the Parisian styled courtyard, with its cobblestone paving and majestic stone faced facade that transport the guest immediately into a freedom from disturbance. From this point onwards, the hotel invites one into deeper circles of exclusivity. Check in was expedient, gracious and our rewards status was noted and upgraded generously. The lobby is an artistic achievement with stunning marble, expressive busts by Javier Marin and a robust iron scroll gate. Tapestries, paintings, sculpture and mosaic are found in abundance throughout the hotel in a collection that’s essentially eclectic.
The hotel has achieved several impressive rewards in recent years and at just under two hundred rooms there’s plenty of space and refinement dedicated to each guests experience. The rooms convey a comfortable yet modern simplicity among the furnishings and fixtures. Huge soaking tubs, plush beds, spacious living rooms and fully integrated technologies make the each room the hotel’s main attraction. Fireplaces and balconies make warm days and frigid days equally enjoyable, while the quick and attentive service makes a stay pleasant. The hotel’s firm no tipping policy is one example of this hotel’s pride in service and individual confidence to be different.
Staff members we interacted with in every part of the hotel possessed a friendly demeanor and an enthusiasm about their work. Hands down the hotel’s breakfast in the Balsan restaurant was a sheer delight. The food was inspirational and the generous $45 credit per person allows one to sample to your heart’s content from the specialized menu. The Elysian Spa, lives up to its heavenly name with an entire range of treatments, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and relaxation room with refreshments. The fitness facilities are top notch and the indoor pool is well done.
Balsan restaurant on site is themed as a sophisticated European Bistro and it has a stunning wine collection to its credit. Bernard’s Bar on the second floor gives off the vibe of a stylish private club where any drink is possible. There is ample meeting space and logistical support for all sorts of public events, meetings and social occasions too. The Waldorf Astoria Chicago is a place where one can expect an elevated price tag, but the experience is a full return in value, which makes it a satisfactory and even a super-fulfilling place to stay and abide.
