Creating quiet spaces of relaxation and calm in the midst of bustling world cities is the signature style of Mandarin Oriental. In a recent experience of their Miami property, we found that here too they continue living up to their high standards of service and tranquil atmosphere.
The hotel was certainly put to the test with an unseasonably high occupancy due to several large groups in town during our stay, but they handled it quite well, such that we noticed an undiminished attention to detail and individual preferences. From start to finish every member of the staff concerned themselves with our well being, going out of their way to be polite, remember names and everyone showed a well trained deference, such that employees would take the stairs rather than add another elevator stop for the guests.
The property boasts a commanding panorama of downtown Miami from its spacious peninsula on Bricknell Key. Arriving amidst the skyscrapers and waterways gives one the sense of exclusivity and the check in process was personal, warm and quick. The bags were immediately brought to the room and the manager personally made time to welcome us to the hotel. Little gestures like handing credit cards back with two hands, walking us to the elevator and going the extra step to offer directions reminded us fondly of the Mandarin Oriental standards we’ve come to enjoy and appreciate in Asia.
The décor of the rooms, halls and public spaces is unmistakably Asian themed and modern. Lots of light colors, greens, crème, light browns are reminiscent of spring. The artwork is a blend of various Asian styles featuring paintings, sculpture and even blown glass in the shape of bamboo. The standard room has a soaking tub, shower, state of the art electronics, desk space, comfortable bedding and a small balcony. The bathroom has a half wall opening from which one can have a view into the room and to the skyline beyond.
Spa and Relaxation areas:
The arguable highlight of any Mandarin Oriental is certainly the Spa. Conveniently the Spa, gym and outdoor pool area with adjacent beach are all accessible in the same complex. The Spa staff are really on top of things from booking treatments, to showing one around to constant replacement of amenities such as towels, snacks, teas and water. There is a dedicated relaxation room, steam room, sauna, experiential shower and personal grooming center around the lockers. The pool area and beach are set out in the open and have a full bar, Jacuzzi, beach chairs both poolside and in the sand. The gym enjoys views overlooking the pool area and it possesses good quality equipment.
Food and Beverage:
The MO Bar hosts a prominent spot in the lobby area. It has the feel of a grand open space, proper for Miami, yet the bamboo partitions around the area itself give it a cozier feel. La Mar and Azul, two wonderfully reviewed on site restaurants give guests and visitors some of Miami’s newest trending dishes. The hotel breakfast is held in La Mar and it offers a good range of menu options.
