Bogota has completely transformed itself in recent years and one of the best ways we’ve experienced this cosmopolitan shift is through the quality and variety of restaurants. As of this moment it is home to three of Latin America’s Top 50 restaurants and there are countless others worthy of gastronomic praise too.
We were thrilled to get a reservation on our most recent trip to Harry Sasson, it is currently the number one ranked in Colombia and a contender on the Top 50 in Latin America list. The experience for us however went beyond any critic’s rankings, it was truly a memorable and engaging place to delight in food.
The venue itself is spectacular, outside it looks like a quaint, European styled traditional home made with bricks and wood. There’s a small front yard garden and it looks like you are pulling up to a friend’s house with traditional bay windows and a chimney. Inside it is a trendy yet stylish place. There is a naturally lit area which looks like a converted greenhouse that has a beautifully central bar. Inside the house portion itself it is more dimly lit, quieter and intimate.
The menu incorporates more dishes than a typical fine restaurant but from the wide sampling we had, it is quality across the board. It features local tendencies of Arabic food, typical fare like empanadas and the grilled meats. Vegetarian options are found across the menu as well. There is an eclectic selection of wines, which range from ever country, varietal and price point. The restaurant is large and was packed with people yet still it delivered quality and intimate service. Given the number of people the slight wait time was understandable, but not off putting and when everything was brought to the table it was hot and as described.
There are actually three venues of Harry Sasson but this one is the best in Colombia and experienced the biggest jump in rankings in the last year. We recommend calling ahead for a reservation, it may even get you a better spot in the house portion of the restaurant which is quieter, as it did for us. The valet is complimentary, they give you a form to register everything of value in the car should you want to leave something behind they guarantee the safety of what’s marked down. Its best to ask for the car when you are asking for the check, they validate your parking and have it ready by the time you wish to depart.
