No Bai is the international airport serving Hanoi. It is located 28 miles outside the city center, and it takes around 45 minutes to get there. It is possible to use private transfer, taxi, minivans or regular buses to get to the city.
Buses number 7 and 17 connect Noi Bai Airport with Hanoi city center. Number 7 connects the airport to Kim Ma bus station.
and 17 goes to Long Bien bus station. The cost either bus is 5,000 VND (like $0.3 USD) per person and tickets must be bought with cash. One can catch either bus on the right hand side of the arrivals hall upon walking outside. The Buses run every 15-20 minutes and take around one hour to arrive to their city terminals. They run from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Just outside the terminal there are many stands for fixed price taxi’s that cost normally between 12 to 16 USD per car to the city center and a little higher if one is on the way to a different area of the city. It is good to keep in mind that the price agreed before the trip is the final price, the cost for toll is already included. If one picks up a taxi outside the official stands it is possible to get a better price for the trip, but there are several risks involved, the most common being the fact that they want to charge a different price at the end.
Note: It is a good idea to be familiar with the area where the hotel is located and to be firm in the fact that one should be taken to the desired destination. Many travelers even print a map with the specific location to keep it handy.
There are many buses leaving the airport to the old quarter, these cost around two USD, for a little extra they will take you to your desired hotel not without the offering of taking you to a different hotel that according to them is “cheaper and better”, these mini buses will not leave until they are full.
Once in the city scooter taxis are fun -yes a little dangerous- but probably a way to experience Hanoi with adrenaline, in the same way that with regular taxis, the best thing is to agree in the price before jumping onto one.
