We are great fans of the liquid gold that is coffee, it powers our world and is a drink of distinction that can be savored like a fine wine or an expensive whisky. Typically big chains like Starbucks buy coffee in bulk from various growers and bring it to the US and process it to sell, but this foray is Starbucks first venture into a hands on coffee farm they own themselves.
The lovely Hacienda Alsacia just opened up before us like a Disneyland for coffee lovers! The plantation captures the verdant beauty of a Costa Rican coffee farm with a modern tasting facility overlooking some dramatic scenery.
This plant to cup facility is the only place in the world where you can have an authentic Starbucks coffee that is grown, processed and served to drink right on the same premises.
The coffee that we tried was absolutely delicious. We found the typical Costa Rican citric acidity in some varietals while others were smooth and balmy.
At the open air coffee bar one can order any of the traditional Starbucks offerings or varieties that are produced and sold only here. For a Starbucks fanatic or even a coffee connoisseur this is the place to indulge.
There are options to have food as well with a tasty menu, go on official tours of the farm or just walk around. There are beautifully terraced hillsides and an impressive waterfall.
There is ample parking on site and it is clean and safe. Hacienda Alsacia is located only thirty minutes from the San Jose Airport so it can make for a great side trip from San Jose or a stop on your way to the mountains or the beaches.
