As of the writing of this article is my favorite expression of the drink called wine is Brunello di Montalcino. I try everything from every region I can when traveling or at home. The simple truth is I’ve not found a drink that rivals this for its power and smooth beauty.
Every wine shop big and small that I visit anywhere in the world I keep an eye open for Brunello. Some brands make their way out of Italy more than others and I’ve been rewarded by some amazing finds from keeping my eyes peeled in different places.
The truth is the best wine shop with the most Brunello di Montalcino variety I’ve ever found is just twenty meters outside the walls of the town of Montalcino in Italy. It makes sense since the Sangiovese Grosso grape is cultivated on the surrounding hills and valleys and made according to the region’s specifications in local wineries.
This treasure cove of a wine shop is named Enoteca Bruno Dalmazio. This place is wall to wall best hits from the Tuscany region in general and the Montalcino area in particular. There are bottles representing some classical Brunello vintages such as ’85 ’97 ’99 ’10 and ’12. This wine ages impeccably and to find such silky smooth manifestations in abundance is a rare treat.
The walls are lined with specialty magnum bottles, Collector’s edition bottles as well as some well renowned bottles from Sassicaia, and other smooth drinking classics. The shop ships to many places worldwide for a flat fee and they are exquisitely friendly and helpful in explaining the wonderful bottles they serve.
