Two of Europe’s smaller yet scenic capitals are around only an hour from each other. Vienna and Bratislava. Whether you are coming in straight from the Vienna airport and want to go to Slovakia, you are returning a car there or its just logistically easier as a day trip, the Vienna Airport bus to the Bratislava main bus station is the best way to get between both locations.
The buses between the Vienna airport and the city of Bratislava are scheduled regularly with several companies between 5am and upwards of 11pm. Some of the buses make the trip as part of a larger route and these student buses are like low cost airlines. We caught one at 8am and it was a perfect 5 Euro ride which included luggage and a complimentary hot drink inside the bus. The driver we paid in cash and an attendant gave us directions about which of the three spots in Bratislava would be closest to our hotel.
There are an abundance of buses between the cities and the airports in either direction because Bratislava airport and city is just 40 minutes from the Vienna Airport. As a result many passengers to Bratislava just fly to Vienna and take the bus because the cost is far cheaper. The buses in the Vienna airport can be found directly outside of the arrivals hall on platforms 3 and 4. There are three stops in Bratislava. One in the old town by the bridge, one in Einsteinova across the river and the final stop in the central bus station which is in between the newer district and the old town.
The bus was very new with comfortable seats, complimentary drinks, each seat had a tv screen with various options for entertainment from the radio, to USB technology, to movies and TV shows. The stops were announced in several languages including English. There is lots of baggage space underneath and the boarding process is expedited with the driver and a ticket person doing the check in.
