We often find that hotels right in the heart of a major tourist destination can be overpriced or overinflated or both! However our recent stay at Plaza Colon leaves no doubt it is a colonial luxury address at the heart of town which fulfills some of the best hospitality expectations.
Granada is a gorgeous city between the brightly colored buildings, edifying Churches, scenic lake and colonial feeling. We found it a bit too touristy in the sense of big groups of tourists and the usual hotels, shops and restaurants, but Plaza Colon was different from the start. We rode in with our vehicle and rooftop bicycles checking in on the busy main street. Not to worry parking was included and we had a secure garage area where our bicycles could remain with the vehicle.
We were received in a very friendly manner by all the staff, even when this hotel is known to many as the best of the city there was nothing but genuine service and positive attitudes from all the staff. We were given complimentary welcome cocktails which reflected the local style, we were a bit bummed they wouldn’t let us swap them for a house wine, but they were appreciated in the afternoon heat nonetheless.
We found the room as well as the inner courtyards to have all the charm of a centuries old boutique hotel. There are sitting patios with fountains, a pool and beautiful greenery which keep the noise and the dust of the city far away, even though it is just outside. The room had excellent air conditioning, the beds and all accouterments were wonderful. The price for being a top luxury boutique hotel was very affordable compared to what one would pay in a touristed town elsewhere.
The location lent itself to allowing us to go out to stroll many times during the day. No matter how much of the city you see you are always not far from the hotel since it is really at the center of everything. The breakfast included in the stay is marvelous. A truly authentic Nicaraguan gallo pinto we savored along with the excellent coffee and fresh fruits. We recommend this in unison with many other who have been impressed for its location, hospitality and authentic immersion in the spirit of Granada’s history.
