This AC hotel is a double whammy, being both the jewel in the crown of the AC Hotel brand from Spain and A Luxury Collection Property, one of the Marriott family of hotel’s luxury distinctions.
In the Val D’Aran of Northeastern Spain one can find some of the country’s best alpine living and a true hidden gem among normally pricey European ski resorts. AC hotels are known throughout Spain and in several other countries for being practical places to stay where European simplicity is the norm.
AC Hotels are always clean, smart and simple and this property is the exception, in a fantastic way. It possesses that understated charm, but also throws in a bit of extravagance. It is the only truly five star hotel in the Baqueira-Beret ski area and while space is still a European premium even here, the decor, service, location, cuisine and amenities are refined.
The hotel staff demonstrated their flexibility as we arrived quite early and they made our room available long before check in time. Meanwhile we were invited to use the spa. Being a Titanium member of Marriott went a long way in securing a complementary upgrade to a room that would have otherwise been a substantial pay hike, in fact we were in one of the hotel’s best suites.
The design of the room is alpine with beautiful pine floors, countertop slate and comfy furniture. The bed is incredibly soft and the roof windows give excellent views of the surroundings. The entire feel of the hotel is one that invites relaxation inside and outside the rooms.
Whether one is coming from a full day of skiing or simply wants to be immersed in the mountains and the nature, the hotel has facilities that make being on the brink of the wild fantastic. For ski lovers the lifts are literally a 50m walk. Just surrounding the hotel is an indoor mall where every sort of outdoor equipment and clothing are sold and prices are not bad.
The hotel has wellness facilities that include sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and a small indoor pool. There are treatments available too and the place is always attentively staffed, I think nothing feels better for sore ski joints than a dip in tepid waters.
There are ample social spaces on the hotel’s first floor which include a lounge bar area that is popular with its fireplace and attentive service. An outdoor deck that offers warmers and blankets and a couple themed restaurants that alternate menus and meal services during the week.
The daily breakfast is wonderful and a true demonstration of the hotel’s commitment to luxury cuisine and living. For instance we saw a waiter putting out utensils wearing white gloves and polishing each piece of silverware before setting it down, meticulous and dedicated is a common theme among all the hotel staff.
Whether one is a ski fanatic, a lover of nature or an indulgent type for high European living, the AC Baqueira brings the livery of Spanish hospitality to this incredibly gorgeous corner of the Pyrenees and makes it a worthwhile destination within the destination.
